The regular monthly meeting of the Capital Area Genealogical Society was held January 14, 2007, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. Vice-president Rae Neubaum called the meeting to order at 2:35 p.m. Eighteen members and guests were present. Secretary Freda Yocum read the minutes of the November meeting. A motion to accept the minutes was made and seconded. Secretary Yocum read the treasurer’s report, which is on file with these minutes. Vice-president Neubaum reported that we bought the book that was reported on in November on Juniata County newspaper items from the 1800’s, and it will be available in our library in Febuary. She also reminded everyone of our upcoming meetings: Feb. – James Logan on the Cold Springs area of Stony Creek, and Mar. – joint meeting hosted by the West Shore society – Don Brown on the Tulpehocken settlement. The March meeting will be Mar. 4 (rather than Mar. 11) at 3:00 p.m. We believe (and will confirm) the location will be Silver Spring Presbyterian Church. Vice-president Neubaum reported on upcoming genealogy events: Mar. 11 – the annual Family Heritage Day at the State Museum, and Mar. 24 – Mid-Atlantic Germanic Society, Bowie, Maryland – overcoming obstacles in Germanic research. She then opened the floor for genealogical questions; there were none. Erik Fasick, former archivist at Zion Lutheran Church and current Executive Director of the Pa. Germanic Society, spoke to us on the Pa. Germans in the Harrisburg region and on the Lutheran churches of Harrisburg. Respectfully submitted, Freda J. Yocum Secretary
The regular monthly meeting of the Capital Area Genealogical Society was held February 11, 2007, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. Vice-president Robin Lighty called the meeting to order at 2:30 p.m. Seventeen members and guests were present. Vice-president Lighty explained that President Esther Richwine is still recovering from knee surgery, and that, because Rae Neubaum has to work Sundays, he has taken over as vice president, while Rae has taken over some of Robin’s newsletter duties. Secretary Freda Yocum read the minutes of the January meeting; a motion to accept the minutes was made and seconded. Treasurer Marion O’Neal read the treasurer’s report, and Audit Committee Chair Yocum read the audit report; motions were made and seconded to enter both into the records. Vice-president Lighty reminded attendees of our upcoming meetings: Mar. 4 – joint meeting with the West Shore society at Silver Spring Presbyterian Church – Don Brown on the Tulpehocken settlement, and Apr. 15 at 2:30 – field trip to Paxton Presbyterian Church. He referred everyone to our website for further information on future meetings and reminded us that there will be no meeting in July. Speaker James M. Logan announced upcoming events at the HACC Lebanon Campus: Mar. 17 – the Pa. German Heritage Festival, which is free, and Mar. 18 – genealogy workshop and program with speaker Henry Jones, with a fee that is reduced for members of any genealogy society. Also announced – the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society annual conference the last weekend in March, at a hotel this year rather than at the school. Vice-president Lighty reported that he has been researching the War of 1812 and would like to talk to anybody else researching that war. He has copies of the Lancaster County Historical Society’s publications of all Lancaster County soldiers in the War of 1812, and will donate the State Archives volume on the War of 1812 to our library. Treasurer O’Neal reminded everyone that she’s accepting 2007 dues, and Karl Fox reported on his January trip to Gulfport, Mississippi. James M. Logan and James C. Logan spoke and showed slides on the Cold Spring area of Stony Valley. Respectfully submitted, Freda J. Yocum Secretary

The regular monthly meeting of the Capital Area Genealogical Society was held May 20, 2007, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. President Esther Richwine called the meeting to order at 2:35 p.m. Fifteen members and guests were present. Secretary Freda Yocum read the minutes of the February meeting. A motion to accept the minutes was made and seconded. President Richwine read the treasurer’s report, which is on file with these minutes. President Richwine expressed her thanks to Ron Wix for our tour of Paxton Presbyterian Church in April, and said maybe we can go back when the church’s renovations are complete. Dottie Fox reported that Karl has finished transcribing Woodlawn Cemetery and is working on putting in into the computer. President Richwine then opened the floor for genealogical questions. Lois Ritchie asked what one can expect to find in church records. Various members answered: generally church members, baptisms, marriages, and deaths, but it depends on the church. President Richwine announced that for next month’s meeting, we should bring our research so we can discuss what we found and how we found it, hopefully getting some helpful tips from each other in the process. President Richwine also announced that the board approved the purchase of a copier for our library. Steve Runkle spoke and showed slides on the Pa. Main Line Canal & Public Works, Philadelphia to Hollidaysburg. Respectfully submitted, Freda J. Yocum Secretary

The regular monthly meeting of the Capital Area Genealogical Society was held October 14, 2007, at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. President Esther Richwine called the meeting to order at 2:39 p.m. Seventeen members and guests were present. Secretary Freda Yocum read the minutes of the September meeting. Treasurer Marion O’Neal read the treasurer’s report, which is on file with these minutes. President Richwine reported that we received a thank you letter from the Hummelstown Historical Society for the microfiche reader we donated to them, and that we received old photos that the sender would like to reunite with anyone who can identify them as ancestors; we’ll put them in the newsletter. She also reported that our November speaker will be Dr. Robert Bauer, who will talk about the life of a country doctor. Vice President Robin Lighty reported that he has muster rolls for the War of 1812. The floor was then opened for genealogical questions. Lois Ritchie asked for suggestions for finding a marriage record of someone living in Middletown in the late 1700’s. Annabelle Hoffman commented that marriage was not a sacrament and many churches didn’t record them, although in some cases marriage "bans", which had to appear 3 Sundays, were recorded. President Richwine commented that ministers often took records with them, and that the records sent to the Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary in many cases haven’t been translated from German. Vice-president Lighty referred Lois to the Dauphin County marriages 1785 – 1810 book in our library. President Richwine next addressed the election of officers for 2008. A motion was made and seconded to retain the current officers and to have Jim McAteer, who volunteered for the position, fill the vacant seat on the board. Steve Runkle spoke and showed slides on Assault on the Alleghenies, Hollidaysburg to Pittsburgh on the Pa. main-line canal. Respectfully submitted, Freda J. Yocum Secretary

Call Annabelle (Mrs. Robert) Hoffman for further information. She also remarked that she just found out that we no longer have a website – Bob Maley’s website is no longer on-line. Finally, President Richwine announced our January speakers – a couple who walked across the U.S. Dr. Robert Bauer spoke about the life of a country doctor. Respectfully submitted, Freda J.
